# Talk to Your Data usage & limits

> Understand monthly usage allowances, overage billing, and organization and member limits.

[Talk to Your Data](/docs/interview-data/talk-to-your-data) measures the AI work used to answer questions. Where usage billing is enabled for your organization, a monthly allowance covers initial usage and further work can incur overage.

<Info>
  Billing availability and allowance amounts depend on your organization's configuration. Use the amounts shown in Conveo or contact your Conveo contact for your applicable arrangement.
</Info>

## How cost works

Cost depends on the underlying AI work, including the amount of data reviewed and the tools used. A longer, multi-step analysis can cost more than a focused lookup. There is no fixed cost per question, and identical wording can require different amounts of work.

Ask focused questions and scope research to the relevant studies. Review [Billing](/docs/settings-and-management/billing) for study analysis and other charges.

## Allowance, overage, and cap

The allowance and overage limit are **per member, across the whole organization**, rather than per billing account. The monthly period starts at the beginning of each calendar month in UTC.

1. **Allowance:** usage is covered while the member has free allowance remaining.
2. **Overage:** after the allowance is exhausted, eligible new questions draw on the organization's billing arrangement, up to the member's overage limit.
3. **Cap:** once billed overage reaches the limit, new questions are paused until the limit is raised or a new monthly period begins.

The usage cap is checked for new questions; reaching it does not itself interrupt a question already running. A question crossing the cap is billed only up to remaining overage headroom; Conveo absorbs the excess. This does not guarantee that a question can never fail for another reason.

Lowering a limit does not reverse charges already made. A member can therefore show billed usage above a newly lowered limit.

## What org admins can manage

Open **Settings → Organization → Billing → Talk to Your Data**. The member usage controls appear for organization admins when usage charging is enabled.

| Control                       | Behavior                                                                               |
| ----------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Overage limit for all members | Sets the default monthly overage limit for members, including future members. |
| Set limit for a member | Overrides the organization default for that person. |
| Clear a member's limit | Returns that member to the organization default, or the Conveo default if none is set. |
| Clear the organization limit | Returns members without individual overrides to the Conveo default. |

When updating the organization limit, admins can also choose to remove existing custom member limits. Otherwise, those custom limits continue to take precedence.

The free allowance is shown for reference and cannot be edited through these customer controls. Per-account billing access alone does not authorize changes to organization-wide usage limits.

Members can request a higher limit from the chat when blocked. The request emails organization admins and copies the requester; requesting more does not itself raise the limit.

### Which account pays for overage

For a single-study chat, overage is attributed to the study's billing account. Cross-study chats use a selected account; the chat can prompt for that choice when entering overage. The organization default is used before an explicit cross-study selection where applicable.

Some organizations use a separate overage ledger. In that arrangement, overage accrues for later settlement instead of immediately deducting the selected account's balance. Organization admins can opt in when offered the in-product option. To turn this arrangement off after opting in, contact Conveo; there is no self-serve opt-out control. Outstanding entries remain visible until settled even after the arrangement is disabled, and disabling it does not erase accrued charges.

## Seeing usage in-product

* **Chat usage indicator:** shows the member's allowance and limit state.
* **At the cap:** the chat offers the applicable manage-limit or request-increase action.
* **Member usage table:** admins can review usage, allowance, billed overage, and each member's effective limit. Covered or absorbed work can explain why total usage exceeds billed overage plus the allowance used.
* **Overage statement:** shows outstanding ledger activity when the organization uses that billing arrangement.

If usage is blocked before the member reaches their cap, check the billing account selection, available balance, and any billing prompt in the chat.
