# Van Westendorp Pricing

> Collect four price perceptions, inspect price-sensitivity curves, and review exclusions and currency comparisons

Van Westendorp, also called the Price Sensitivity Meter, asks participants for four price boundaries. Use it to explore when a product feels suspiciously cheap, good value, expensive, or too expensive.

## Configure the question

1. Add a **Pricing** question and select **Van Westendorp**.
2. Describe the product and purchase context participants should price.
3. Set a single currency or configure answer-based currencies.
4. Review the four **Price questions**. You can edit their wording and, in a multilingual study, their translations. Preserve each question's distinct meaning.
5. Open **Probing settings** to choose which price boundaries need follow-up discussion. Each selected boundary receives exactly one follow-up question; the defaults are **Cheap** and **Expensive**. A closing-probe goal can add a final discussion, and the probing-depth setting applies only to that closing discussion. Leaving the goal empty skips it.

The four boundaries are:

| Boundary          | Meaning                                                                    |
| ----------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Too cheap**     | So inexpensive that the participant questions quality or performance.      |
| **Cheap**         | The highest price the participant still considers a bargain.               |
| **Expensive**     | The point where the participant starts considering the purchase expensive. |
| **Too expensive** | A price at which the participant would no longer consider buying.          |

## Participant experience

Participants provide four positive amounts in the selected currency. The form requires strict order: **Too cheap \< Cheap \< Expensive \< Too expensive**. Equal prices or reversed boundaries need correction before submission.

The moderator can discuss the configured boundaries after price entry. Use that explanation to understand what participants assumed about the product, package, quality, and alternatives.

## Read the analysis

Open the pricing question in **Question Coding**. Price-sensitivity curves summarize how the valid sample's answers change across prices. The displayed intersections include an optimal price point, an indifference point, and lower/upper acceptable-range boundaries.

These are method-defined intersections of survey curves, not a proven profit-maximizing price. When curves do not intersect, a price point may be unavailable; do not invent a missing boundary.

The analysis uses eligible completed interviews and needs all four consistently ordered answers. Hidden, deleted, and test interviews do not feed the normal analysis base. Incomplete or inconsistent answers do not become zero-price observations. Check the valid sample count and low-sample warning, including after filtering.

## Inspect and exclude responses

Use the price-distribution and detail controls to inspect unusually high or low answers and their interview context. Researcher-excluded respondents are removed from the curves and price-point calculations; excluded answers can remain visible as outlined distribution bars.

An exclusion changes the analysis, not what the participant originally said. Record why you exclude a response and check the resulting sample rather than removing observations merely because they disagree with the expected result.

## Compare currencies and export

Use the per-currency view for prices participants stated in that currency. Where available, **Combined** converts prices into a target currency using the analysis's exchange-rate snapshot. Check the target currency and conversion information before comparing markets.

Combined prices are converted values. Use the original currency view to trace exact stated amounts and inspect responses. Exchange-rate conversion does not make markets equivalent in purchasing power or product context.

Use **Export chart** for CSV or PNG. Keep the active currency, sample, and filters with any exported interpretation.

## Limitations and troubleshooting

* Launching is blocked when this question or its containing section uses a sequential monadic (random image group) stimulus. Remove the repeating stimulus or move the pricing question into a non-repeating section. The analysis cannot safely combine price boundaries from different concept iterations into one participant response.
* If results are missing, check processing, valid completed responses, active filters, exclusions, and currency availability.
* If a Combined view is unavailable, check whether there are multiple currencies and a usable conversion snapshot; use the per-currency results meanwhile.
* Low sample size, narrow recruitment, and unclear product framing can make the inferred range unstable.
